June 27, 2018
The Johnstown Tomahawks, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), have announced that defenseman Toby Sengvongxay has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey for Gustavus Adolphus College for the 2018-19 season.
Sengvongxay, 21, was acquired in a mid-season trade with the Austin Bruins. The 5’10/195 lbs. native of Luverne, Minnesota, scored two goals and chipped in 19 assists in 54 games played in 2017-18, which included 19 points in 43 games played with the Tomahawks.
Sengvongxay also represented the East Division at the 2018 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament, registering one assist in two games.
Overall in 151 career NAHL games, Sengvonxgay had 42 points. He spent part of the 2015-16 season in the NAHL with the Coulee Region Chill and Brookings Blizzard and also played in portion in the NA3HL for the La Crosse Freeze.
“Toby was just the player and person we were looking for when we acquired him in October,” Tomahawks head coach Mike Letizia said. “He was a veteran defenseman who played a significant role on our blue line and was a leader on and off the ice for our team. Toby’s effort and positive attitude was infectious and never wavered. He is an outstanding person and he should be a huge asset to the hockey program at Gustavus Adolphus. I wish him nothing but success and look forward to following his college career.”
The Golden Gusties compete in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Gustavus Adolphus College is in St. Peter, Minn.
