Kavaya off to Western Michigan
The Fairbanks Ice Dogs have announced that defenseman Peter Kavaya has committed to Western Michigan University (CCHA) for next season.
Now in his third NAHL season, Kavaya, from San Clemente, Calif., has five goals for 23 points after 54 games this season. The 21-year-old is also a plus-15.
“I’m very excited to be attending Western,” said Kavaya, who participated in last month’s NAHL Top Prospects Tournament. “After looking at my options, I felt that Western Michigan was the best fit for me.”
Kavaya started his NAHL career with the Southern Minnesota Express in 2005-06 before being traded to the Ice Dogs last season.
“Peter is a steady, puck-moving defenseman and a leader in the locker room,” said Ice Dogs assistant coach Josh Hauge. “He’ll be looked upon to help us make a run in the playoffs.”
Kavaya is the third player from this year’s Ice Dogs team headed to the CCHA next season, joining goaltender Cody Reichard (Miami) and forward Brock Shelgren (Michigan State). His commitment marks the team’s 10th overall this season.
